Meghan Markle refuses to be sidelined as Sussexes’ return brings royal tensions back into view

0

Meghan Markle has made clear that she will not allow the Royal Family to push her into the background after a Palace statement placed her and Prince Harry firmly outside the working monarchy.

The Duchess of Sussex is understood to be determined to build a visible life in Britain on her own terms, even as the couple settle their children into school, rebuild family links and face renewed questions about their place near the Royal Family. The move has brought a long-running dispute back into daily view, with the Sussexes now living close enough for old tensions to become an immediate concern rather than a distant story played out across the Atlantic.

The latest dispute began with a letter issued on the King’s orders in September. Written by the Lord Chamberlain and sent to senior officials and representatives across the United Kingdom, it confirmed that Harry and Meghan remain “no longer working members of the royal family”. It also described them as “private citizens with commercial and charitable interests”.

The wording drew a firm line around their public position. They retain their titles and family connections, but they do not represent the Crown, carry out official royal duties or return to the role they left in 2020. There are no current plans for either of them to resume life as working royals.

The statement arrived only weeks after the couple returned to Britain with Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five. The children have started at a new school outside London, while Harry and Meghan have established a base in the Cotswolds. They are also expected to keep their home in California and their property in Portugal.

The timing made the message especially pointed. Harry and Meghan had only recently reunited with King Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove, in Gloucestershire. The private meeting in July was the first time the King had seen his grandchildren in person for more than four years and the first visit to Britain by the family together since 2022. It raised hopes that the Sussexes’ return might create space for a warmer family relationship.

Instead, the Palace clarification showed that personal contact has not changed the institutional position. Harry and Meghan may see members of the family privately, but they will not be brought back into the official structure.

A source said, “The latest statement from the Palace was very much pushed by William and Kate – and Meghan knows that. The Waleses have felt totally blindsided by the way Harry and Meghan announced their arrival back to the UK, and with everything that’s happened over the last few years, they just don’t trust them. There is nothing new in the statement, but William felt it was necessary to remind them where the lines are drawn before anything happens.”

The source added, “Meghan is furious over it. She has no intention of allowing the Palace to push her aside or treat her as though she is no longer important, especially by William and Kate. She won’t let them stand in her way.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales have not publicly accepted responsibility for the wording of the letter. Their public response has instead been to continue with a busy programme of official work. William and Catherine appeared together at a series of high-profile engagements in September, while their eldest son, Prince George, began his first term at Eton College.

George’s first day at the school coincided with the renewed attention on the Sussexes. The 13-year-old was photographed arriving with his parents, a major family moment that placed the future King at the centre of the Waleses’ own new chapter. The couple have also remained focused on their children and Catherine’s return to public duties following her cancer treatment.

For the Sussexes, the new life in Britain is being built around independence rather than a return to Palace service. Harry wants Archie and Lilibet to know more about his homeland and their family connections. Meghan is continuing to develop her lifestyle brand, As Ever, and has been linked to possible acting opportunities in Britain after recently returning to the screen with a cameo as herself in an upcoming comedy.

She has so far stayed away from official public engagements since the move. Meghan did not attend Harry’s appearance at the WellChild Awards in London on 21 September, nor did she join him at the Invictus Spirit Gala Dinner. She has instead concentrated on settling the children into their new surroundings and has been seen socially in Oxfordshire.

Harry, meanwhile, has returned to a public schedule. At the WellChild Awards, where he has been a patron since 2007, he met young winners and their families and presented the Inspirational Child award for children aged four to six.

“These Awards are always a very special evening because they give us the opportunity to recognize and celebrate an extraordinary group of children and young people living with complex medical needs, as well as the incredible families who give it everything they’ve got every single day,” Harry said.

He continued, “This year feels particularly special as we celebrate 20 years of the WellChild Nurse program, two decades of supporting thousands of children and families and helping them to live more of their lives at home. These awards are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate that impact, but above all to celebrate the incredible people at the heart of it. Their stories are a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through compassion, connection and community.”

The following day, Meghan shared footage of Harry’s appearance on Instagram. The video showed him meeting children, offering hugs and speaking at the ceremony. She set it to Sam Garrett’s song “I Believe”, including the lyrics, “You are loved, yeah, and you are brave.”

The post offered a public sign of support while also underlining the different paths the couple are currently taking. Harry is becoming more visible through his charitable work, while Meghan is keeping a lower profile as she shapes her own projects and family life in the countryside.

The couple are also said to be strengthening relationships with members of the wider Royal Family. Princess Beatrice and her young family have reportedly visited their new home, while Harry and Meghan are understood to have maintained links with Zara and Mike Tindall at Gatcombe Park. Harry’s uncle, Charles Spencer, also offered the couple a lodge on the Althorp estate, Princess Diana’s childhood home, although they ultimately chose a separate base in the Cotswolds.

Meghan is said to want a life in Britain that does not depend on approval from William and Catherine. One source said, “Meghan wants to build a life in Britain that does not depend on the approval of William and Kate. If the senior royals refuse to make room for the Sussexes, Meghan will create her own network around the royals who are prepared to accept them.”

The hostility between the two couples has deep roots. Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior royals in 2020 and moved to California, later speaking publicly about their experiences inside the institution. Their interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harry’s memoir and a series of television projects exposed private disputes that had already strained relations with William and Catherine.

The brothers have remained apart, despite Harry’s repeated expressions of a wish to repair the relationship. Their disagreement over security in Britain also continued into the past year, while Harry and other claimants faced a major financial setback after losing a privacy case against the publisher of the Daily Mail.

Now the Sussexes are back within reach of the family they left behind. That proximity is likely to keep attention fixed on every meeting, public appearance and family gathering. Harry and Meghan may not be returning as working royals, but they are determined not to disappear from the national conversation.

Meghan’s position is summed up by one source who said, “She doesn’t want to be combative; in fact, she would love it if they could have peace, but she’s very clear she won’t be coming on bended knee to get it.”

With her brand expanding, Harry’s engagements continuing and their children growing up in Britain, the Sussexes are creating a separate platform close to the centre of royal life. The Palace may have defined their status, but Meghan is intent on defining her own role.
